A gauge for inspecting convoluted splines on submarine dive planes during the machining process. The gauge is fitted with interchangeable tooling balls at each end to allow the peak and trough of the spline to be accurately measured. With the part in the machining centre, the gauge is placed between opposing splines with the measurement captured via a wireless indicator and transmitted to a host PC, where the measurements are recorded.
Tolerances for each measuring point are input and the software flags splines that require further machining. The task historically took approximately 2 days per part.
With this gauge the inspection/rework time was reduced to about 1/2 day per part!
